Trailer #3 Early Interior

Here are a few shots of the interior of the boat trailer. Originally, I wasn't planning on insulating it at all. I painted, the winter came, and I decided I better insulate after all. I did a combination of salvaged rigid foam insulation and bought denim/cotton UltraLogic insulation. The interior is salvaged fir and redwood. The electric runs through the walls, and through the ceiling, leading to a chandelier toward the windows. The trim work is yet to be completed. I am considering a pressed tin ceiling.

I've gone and done it. Started a third trailer.

Saturday we moved it.

Sunday I cut off unnecessary metal parts and ground out rust.

Monday painted places without paint,

built the floor joists, and decided on the fastening system

for connecting the structure with the metal frame.

When Rian and Jess came home we moved the trailer

around to the back of the house where I'll continue building.

It's getting so beautiful. Amy & I are working our asses off. Come this Sunday to see: Tucker Street, between First and Second Streets. Near downtown Healdsburg. The two trailers will be out on show for all to come enjoy in whatever way. 4pm until dark. Bring a friend. Bring some beers. Bring whatever. We'll be here. Time willing, I'll make a big batch of mojitos.

Today we did so much it's hard to recall. Wainscoting, trim, counter support, marble install, sink dropping in, touch up work... And Greg with Kublai, bless the man and the dog, brought over a 3 foot magnet on a roller like a push broom so we can get all the metal debris out of the driveway to spare the tires before Sunday's rollout. He also busted in the door handle hardware and ladder, as we push to have everything ready and pristine for Sunday.

Deadlines can be great.

Interior Walls

It's feeling more and more like a livable space every day. Yesterday Amy finished the masonite interior while I did the interior bay window ceiling. Then we joined forces to get the beginning of the loft framed along with the wet bath / closet. We brought in one bank of the marble counter top--both of us were a bit taken aback--it looked stunning.

Today we plan on finishing the wet bath / closet (we like to call it the wet closet) framing and walls, the loft framing and floor, and then, time willing, begin on installing the bamboo flooring.

Next up: wainscoting.

Night Time in Trailer #1

Last night I took some photos of my home to show you all.

My desk: I used to always work on the floor with my supplies spread around me. After time sitting on the stoop above the wheels and fender, relaxing by dangling legs out the double doors, it's natural for me to set up a "desk" for myself on the floor using the threshold to the door as a raised level. On the far right you can see my toilet.

My guest room: the loft!

My kitchen: on the far left you can see my bathroom (a chamber pot), just above that you can see the ladder that goes up to the loft. The oven works like a horse. The oak cabinet will not live there, where it is now, between the oven and sink, but for now it isn't tripping, and fits with all my postcard making, letter stencils and stamps, and wood and lino cut supplies. Then on the far right, bulk foods.

My bedroom: layered fabric protects me from the sludge of the day.

In the first week of July 2010, Kirsten and Nicolás of Faircompanies.com came by the building site and documented Amy and I as we worked on trailer #2. Later this summer their bilingual website will feature short documentaries on this project, in English and Spanish.

Faircompanies is a project of Faircompanies Barcelona, Spain, created and developed by Nicolás Boullosa. The website is the consequence of notes gathered during travels, valuable lectures and conversations; as well as the direct contribution of Kirsten Dirksen, co-founder of Faircompanies and director of its English version and multimedia content. Another long few days getting the exterior flashing and siding on with attention to every detail. Amy left this evening to pickup some bamboo flooring from someone on Craigslist who had 300 sqft of left overs. We'll only need 128 of it for the floor, but can use the rest for other interior trim and detailing.

Milling some Pine

A long short day on the old table saw, milling lap joints into the 1x6 pine that will adorn the ceiling.

Dado blade going in the table saw.

Feather board to keep everything tight for clean cuts.

Old and malfunctioning table saw. Missing key, bad pulley tension. In this case, no pulley tension. Every time a tool breaks you get to learn more about it. If it feels like a pain, I try to remember to ask myself, What's the rush?

Between running the boards through and fiddling with the motor, this is about how the scene looked all day.

And by the end, a fat stack of pine with lap joints ready to install in the interior ceiling.

Home Being Wrapped

It's only 11am, I've come inside to charge the battery of my camera, and I'm already halfway done wrapping.

Doing the upper parts alone took a bit longer, but proved to be a worthwhile balancing and rafter-crawling act.

My feelings about Du Pont follow visually, alas...

Second-Hand Pine Acquired!

The team had a day of planning & purchasing under the same bleeding moon. The sun was unbearable, even though it was barely hot, and so our minds went to work on the future of the home: it's looks, it's make-up of materials, it's opening statement, and it's finer details.

We've decided on a light pine ceiling, also to be used in the high loft and low loft floors. We'll install a chocolate colored masonite (tempered hardboard) for the interior walls, with the same light pine for all trim work. The pine was from a local lumber yard, Nu Forest Products--but once it got rained on, it was sold at low cost to Heritage Salvage in Petaluma, where we found it after it had been dried out with stickers. At 40 cents a linear foot for 1" x 6" boards, the price does add up, but it will be a beautiful and important detail in the home.

We've also figured out the details of the exterior flashing, and are ready to buy these 10' metal sticks for the job of keeping the home dry.

How Long Will This Take?

Sometimes it's hard to wrap my head around.

It's such a small structure, so I think, it shouldn't take that long.

Knowing all the puzzles that arose with trailer tiny house #1, however, I think, will this next one ever be finished by late August?

Many things are possible, and a certain kind of thinking doesn't help. Good planning does help. And remembering that you're doing the best you can.

Anchor Bolts

This is a tardy post, but I'm sticking it in chronologically -- it is very important. The photo below shows the anchor bolts we used for tying in the studs (wall framing) to the trailer frame. Trailer and subfloor system can and will vary, so the solution for this trailer is quite different than from trailer #1.

We figured the system together, but Amy took charge of getting everything solid, tight, and beyond sturdy.

Four Walls Up, Working on the Rafters

Another day on framing. Began the bay window wall / hitch end wall yesterday afternoon. Finishing that and roof rafters today. Hopefully begin on sheer tomorrow.

Beer at the end of the day yesterday.

Many things going on in life these days, mom's face shows it.

Power tools in the shade, in theory.

End of the day today, rafters not in, though the hurricane ties are in and ready for wood. We (gulp) purchased plywood today. A major event, for me.

Tomorrow we will finish off the framing that still lingers, and then screw and glue the sheer.

doing the copper soldering on the sink plumbing
attaching faucet securely
finishing counter top behind and to the right of sink
making the coved trim pieces on the router table
installing trim where needed
building thin shelf for translucent dishes behind sink
rigging the mechanism for lifting the roof
finish screwing down the roof (should have been done already)
finish little chunk of exterior siding that I can't really reach right now (should have been done already)
put up last piece of metal corner trim
cut small upper metal pieces to finish all corner trim
make door! in kitchen area that will lead to outdoor bathroom
make door for storage area

So today is Sunday, our day of rest on trailer #2. I might get a few things crossed off this list, unless the river gets me first.

Amy & Jenine got busy today. Hot day. No hard hats, but jog bras and bikinis.

One wall, the back wall by the license, is all framed out ready for further action.

The front door wall is up and still needs the majority of the studs, but has the corners in.

We'll take Sunday as a day of rest and get back to it Monday.

3 Long Days, the 4th Will Be the Longest

I've put in three long days of work on my house. It's a lot of work. Building a house takes a lot of attention to details and systems thinking that is stimulating. Even though this house is small, it still incorporates most attributes of a home ten times its square footage. Because it is small, decisions... how wide the loft opening is, where to place a food storage shelf, how many inches to have to the right of the sink, how much storage space to put under an island chopping block that will also function as a dining table and therefore want legroom ...like these are ongoing and condensed. Basically I'm trying to say: buiding a house is a lot of work.

These days I'm working on bringing my house closer to completion. Amy & I are taking a break on trailer #2, to begin work up again on the 24th of June. It's nice to put all my energy back into my trailer. Finishing the sink, plumbing, cutting marble, baseboard, roof on top of window push-out in the kitchen, trim around window push-out in the kitchen, other trim, trim, and trim, sanding chopping block and other sanding, deciding on if any/kind of wood finishing oils...

So begins the 4th day of work since returning from Portland. Salute the sun, on this longest day of the year.

And Howard's Wax & Feed (beeswax and orange oil) for the wood.

Then, after cutting down the carpet to size, I built a shelf into the storage space, the right size for storing milk crates.

Then I rinsed and steel brushed some old barn wood for making a temporary cover to my storage area. When I move out and rent this house I will screw off this area that will store my stuff. When I return I hope to one day make two sliding doors that can be lifted out of their tracks so as to give easy access to things below.

I also decided to move the opening in the loft, which took a little grunt work.

I also finally cut the roof and finished the part over the pushed out window in the kitchen. But like this photo, the amount of work I've done begins to blur after so many hours dedicated to the same small space. It can be lovely, when rather than tuning into all that still needs some attention, I'm able to find a relaxed poise and enjoy all that I have already put together.

Return from Portland

Tomorrow morning I will return to the long day alone working on my house; with renewed vigor for attending to details with care and niceness, sweet music, and shared meals with my growing family of Alexanders.

Time with loved ones is invaluable, like having wind on your feets and head, but still a warm enough torso. Thanks to the ocean and wilderness for their reminders!

So lovely to have a lovely business building partner.

Spent the moist day with the trailer all covered down, and us around town. We found (we think) all the doors and windows we'll need (besides the dutch door we'll make) from another local salvaging resource. Knowing these dimensions is imperative so that when we start framing, as early as tomorrow late-afternoon, we'll know the rough openings we'll be working with.

Framing the Floor Joists

And then a little bit more work later:

It was a long day, with many setbacks between hardware stores, staples, hammer tackers, and a stream of lovely visitors... onto the prying-jacking out of our work so we could get on with the finishing of undercarriage (stainless steel staples with 24" aluminum flashing), then lay the whole thing back in place (lay in this context = sledge hammering), fluffing and cutting in soft cheeked denim cotton insulation, stretching out ye old salvaged tar paper, and! by the end of the day we covered up for rain just in time, so you can't even see all the work. Nice trick.

Welding Continues

Welding the New Trailer

Great thanks to Janelle with the new welding machine, a Millermatic 211, with 110/220 volt switchable MIG welder. We didn't have any 220 outlets so Amy rigged up a direct line to the utility box in the garage. We used fluxcore wire rather than gas. Things were great until the new machine blew a chunk when it really shouldn't have if it had been ready for work. This brought a slight stall and quite a bit of learning more about all the mechanisms that make MIG welding possible (in that learn-when-it-breaks kind of way). So Janelle's machine went to the shop for a new PC board, and we kept crackling like sizzling bacon with a rented welder in order to, you know, forge ahead. Nice days, three women, meshing metal.

Then rolling her out to the building site. Ready for round two.

Things moved close to the ground so they don't fall around.

Truck paused with house; next trailer's turn to back in.

New trailer getting backed in to place for welding and building to come.

I stood inside my house at the beginning of the move. It was incredibly quiet and still. I had visions of creaking and things falling all over the place. There was very little swinging, and the books I left on the shelves were fine. Tomorrow Amy and I will begin welding on the new trailer with Janelle. Thanks to Greg and Amy for their doing the whole trailer in reverse business.

Big thanks to Michael at Kauth Bros. in Santa Rosa for his friendliness and allowing us access to the scrap pile for finding the 4" channel iron Amy and I will use for our trailer.

Tomorrow I will be moving my house.

Just about 10' further down the driveway.

It will need to go all the way out the driveway so the new trailer can get backed in, and then the house will get backed in behind it.

My house has been here since mid-September.

Deck

Worked on the deck today. Then jumped in the river when it was hot time.

I ended up creating a satisfying stripe with a variation of scraps from the interior fir flooring (originally from Trulious whom I met via free stuff on Craigslist) and old chicken coop fir flooring (from the lovely barn taken down at the beginning of this project).

Now I just need to complete the steps going up to the little landing, all of which I will be able to pull inside when on the road.

I'm also getting the front porch awning together, slowly.

Extranjeros En Su Propia Tierra/Strangers In Their Own Land is a collection of life stories, history, and timeless fables woven together to reveal the human element in today's immigration issues. Provocative and intriguing, this play raises questions about the meanings of boundaries, countries, and kindness. A post-show discussion with members of the cast, many of whom are affiliated with the Centro Laboral de Graton/Graton Day Labor Center, invites the audience to have a dialogue based on the issues raised by the play.

Actually, Work Happening Downstairs

I find myself working downstairs. Moving around the chopping block table and pushing the bench / chest to the side for puppet making. I quite like having a fluid space downstairs that can transform to fit my needs. My art making materials are still up in the loft. But I now plan on having that be a second bed region, and keeping my art stuff in the 3' storage area under my bed, where I can easily pull it out, work and make a mess, and then retract everything into order. It's so nice to have a second bed ready for friends and passersby. The luxury of a guest bed, even in a 6' 10" wide by 16' long trailer.
